Rich and Healthy Ragi Kazhi for kids

Ragi/Finger millet kazhi is nothing but ragi cooked in a thick paste like form. I introduced ragi/Finger millet kazhi to my kids at 7 months old. Ragi/Finger millet can be introduced after 6 months old if the baby doesn’t get any allergic reaction. If you are introducing ragi/Finger millet to your 6 months old baby prepare ragi/Finger millet kazhi with the incredients ragi flour/Finger millet, water and panakarkandu (brown rock sugar).

Add brown rock sugar/panakarkandu(2 tbsp or as required) in hot water (about 2 1/2 cups of water) once it dissolved filter it so that any dirty things will go off. Let it cool. Mix ragi flour(4 tbsp) to the water and bring it to heat, stir continuously until it becomes thick. Once thicken remove from heat and let it warm before you feed your baby.

The above method is for 6 months old baby. Later on you can introduce almonds and cashews.(consult doctor before introducing these nuts)

I prepared the following kazhi for my 1+ year old kid.

Ingredients
  • Ragi flour(finger millet) – 4 tablespoons
  • Milk – 1 cup
  • Water – 1½ cups
  • Cashew nuts – 4
  • Almonds – 6
  • Cardamom pod – 1
  • Panakarkandu (palm crystals/brown  rock candy) – 2 tablespoons or as required

Method

Soak cashew nuts and almonds overnight or for 8 hours.

Mix water and panakarkandu with milk and bring it to boil. Once done remove it from fire, filter it and keep aside. Let it get warm.

Grind cashew nuts and almonds into a fine paste.

Make sure boiled milk is warm and slowly mix ragi flour and then ground cashew nuts and almonds paste without any lumps.

Crush the cardamom and add it to the mixture.

Heat the mixture in a medium heat, stir continuously.

When it starts to thicken reduce the heat and stir continuously.

When it becomes a thick paste, remove from the heat and let it warm before you serve your baby.
